If you want a striking tree that will quickly give structure and colour to your garden then the 'Purple Tower' is the perfect choice. With its glossy, ovate-triangular leaves and its dangling spring catkins, this tree offers varying interest. The leathery leaves are dark purple-green in colour and are held on attractive purple-red stems. Come autumn the foliage turns to golden orange and crisp purple colours, which adds further interest before the leaves fall.
This fast-growing tree is highly recommended for architectural planting, or as a windbreak, as it will soon become a strong and sturdy specimen; you can however prune it annually to keep it smaller. The 'Purple Tower' has a broadly columnar habit and you should ensure you don't plant it too close to buildings as it will eventually grow to have strong roots. This Cottonwood will thrive in any soil but do ensure that it is free-draining as it does not tolerate waterlogged sites.
You can plant this Populus alongside another fast-growing, handsome specimen: we would recommend the Populus alba as the silvery leaves of the alba look great against the violaceous tones of the 'Purple tower'.
