The Indian Bean Tree, also known as Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’, is a beautiful specimen that works well in many spaces. It flourishes in any soil type. Although, the Catalpa Aurea does prefer full shelter from strong winds.
It features pretty panicles of white flowers which emerge in summer, often followed by a display of slender bean-like pods which hang pendulously. The oversized, heart-shaped leaves are a striking buttery yellow colour and make a fantastic backdrop for the floral display in summer.
The fresh foliage emerges bronze and matures to dazzling yellow, before fading to a golden green colour in late summer. This ever changing display provides great visual interest during the summer months.
Ensure that you protect this deciduous tree from strong winds and from late frosts as young leaves can be susceptible to damage.
Reaching a height of around 5 metres and a spread of up to 4 metres, the Catalpa Aurea will work well in many different spaces. Plus, it’s rounded growth habit ensures that you can use it within a mixed planting scheme.
Enjoy the yellow tinged colours summer after summer with the Indian Bean Tree.
