Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) is a stunning specimen with eye-catching reddish bark, green, glossy green leaves, and most importantly, delicious fruit!Â
Arbutus unedo can either be grown as a shrub, when in bush form, or as a medium sized tree.
As autumn rolls around, this strawberry tree produces small, white flowers that attract all kinds of pollinators from butterflies to bees. Since the fruits take 12 months to ripen, Arbutus unedo bears both mature fruits and flowers at the same time, making it incredibly beautiful.
The strawberries start out green and turn a vibrant, bright red.
Of course, the strawberries are delicious when they’re picked directly from the tree, but they’re also scrumptious in preserves, jams or even liqueurs.
Arbutus unedo’s deep green leaves give a wonderful contrast to the rich red fruits and bright white flowers. This strawberry tree is an evergreen, and it retains its leaves throughout the winter months. It really does have striking appeal all year round!
Arbutus unedo performs to its best when it is in well-drained soil. This tree is ideal for any location due to its wind-resistance meaning it can tolerate coastal conditions just as well as any normal garden setting.
Plus, the strawberry tree is drought-tolerant once it’s established, making it a great choice for low-maintenance gardeners. As a versatile specimen, Arbutus unedo will look fantastic in borders, planted as a mixed hedge or as a standalone feature.
With a mature height and spread of about 5-6 metres, this Strawberry Tree is a solid choice for small or medium sized gardens. Plus, Arbutus unedo has a slow growth rate, so it won’t dominate your garden space.
Enjoy your very own slice of Mediterranean bliss with Arbutus unedo and enjoy strawberries, year after year.
