The Sweet Chestnut is a large broad headed tree, well known and cultivated for its edible fruits. The bark on older trees is deeply ridged in a spiral pattern. Dark green, glossy leaves turn yellow in autumn. Spikes of creamy flowers in summer are followed by spiny light green husks containing the brown chestnuts.
