This is a most unusual form of Magnolia. The tree has a neat, compact habit, and deep burgundy flowers with a strong tulip shape. The tree is ideal for a small garden and the flowers make a really striking statement on unclothed branches in winter or early spring. This variety would be ideally placed against light background that contrasts strongly against the colour of the blooms, to show them at their best. As with all of our other vaieties, Magnolia 'Genie' would make a fine statement tree in a location that can be viewed through a window during the colder months.
The colour of the blooms in this variety is particularly stable, compared to some other burgundy forms. The leaves are small, and a rich dark green.
This variety was bred by New Zealand breeder, Vance Hooper, over a period of 15 years using lines of Magnolia soulangeana and Magnolia liliiflora.
