Common Name: Western red cedar
Latin Name: Thuja plicata 'Zebrina'
Soil: Moist but well-drained (will tolerate most soil types)
Position: Full sun or shade
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height in 10 years: 3m - 4m
Special features: A tall conical conifer with bright green foliage tinged with yellowish flecks.
A variegated conifer with foliage sprays, pendulous at their tips, in shades of yellow and green. This is a most attractive, graceful feature. At a distance, the tree is seen as a light yellowed green shade.
Because of the subtlety of its foliage, it deserves a place where it can be viewed, hence a position near a sitting area is recommended rather than treating it as an isolated specimen. The fruity odour of the crushed foliage is an added attraction.
