Magnolia liliflora 'Nigra' is a wide-spreading but compact medium-sized shrub with broad, shining green leaves. The slender tulip-like flowers gradually open wide to reveal their vinous-purple outside and creamy white, stained purple inside, which are freely produced from late spring to early summer. This Magnolia is best in a sheltered position and is tolerant of high atmospheric pollution
